This is the selection of earthquake money shots, with which the National Geographic youtube channel invites viewers to See earthquakes pound San Francisco and pulverize Taiwan.
Looking closer at.. well, the black and white photocopy of a reproduction of The destruction of Lisbon, I find Marquis de Pombal looking outwards, beyond the canvas / beyond the scene as it were. He takes a step forward (right foot first) and seems undisturbed by the actuality of the disaster. In fact, he seems as if posing in a time travel depiction, where he was in Nov, 1st 1755 with the vantage point of experiencing it in retrospect - or with the ability to foresee - he's already looking to "his" present.
